Is dedicated fibre internet access suitable for my business?

29/04/2019

If you're already sold on the benefits of full-fibre internet access, your business has in excess of 10 team members, and/or you have high internet usage needs, you should consider dedicated fibre internet connectivity. We take a look at dedicated fibre and how it differs from shared fibre so you can better understand your options.

The term 'fibre' has been used for some time by the marketeers of many of the larger internet companies in the industry. It's use has been somewhat homogenised in describing the actual service offered and how much 'fibre' is actually used in the delivery of the internet service offered.

Going back to the very beginning and the only option we had to access the internet was 'dial up' or 'narrowband’. This was very quickly followed by 'broadband'. Offering greater speed, broadband quickly became the mainstay for home and small business internet access.

'Fibre to the cabinet' followed, is now available to some (not all) and is delivered, as the name suggests, by fibre optic cable to the roadside cabinet, then traditional copper to the home or business premises. On average this is around four times faster than traditional broadband, but this can vary based on the distance between the roadside cabinet and the home or premises.

Another aspect of these services which can really impinge on their performance is their asymmetric nature, meaning you can always 'pull' more data from the internet than you can 'push' out to the internet. Fine for downloading music or movies, but much less suitable for businesses using cloud based applications, storage and time sensitive services like hosted voice and video conferencing services.

Full fibre internet access, as the name implies, is fibre all the way to your premises. It's yours, not shared with neighbours, is most likely available now and perfect for business offering the following advantages over previous offerings;

Fast and guaranteed speeds
Dedicated fibre offers speeds from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps. This speed is guaranteed and will not be interrupted by others or by 'contended' service.

Symmetrical speeds
Dedicated fibre internet access benefits from symmetrical speed, meaning that it is just as fast for uploading as it is for downloading. Even during periods of high demand your business internet speeds will remain consistently high, no matter what it's being used for.

Managed service

Dedicated fibre internet access benefits from symmetrical speed, meaning that it is just as fast for uploading as it is for downloading. Even during periods of high demand your business internet speeds will remain consistent. This makes the service perfect for all cloud based services and applications.
