TalkTalk Offering 80Mbps Broadband Connection

March 20th, 2012

TalkTalk has announced an 80Mbps broadband service, taking advantage of a speed boost on BT’s network that BT is not yet offering to its own customers.

TalkTalk, a BT wholesale customer, has begun offering an 80Mbps broadband connection, before BT retail has announced its own service.

The ISP said on Monday that from early April, customers in certain areas will be able to get up to 80Mbps, instead of the current maximum of 40Mbps. People can pre-register now to receive the boosted service, which will also provide upload speeds of up to 20Mbps, as long as their area is fibre enabled.

High Speed Business Internet

March 10th, 2012

Cloud Computing comes in many guises.

Some, such as Salesforce.com, LinkedIn and facebook etc are pretty easy to define and understand. Others, such as the mini case study we have produced for our client, Moto Direct, aren’t perhaps quite so obvious.

Taking information held on company systems, and allowing clients and suppliers access to this easily has been around for a long time now. We first did this over eight years ago, helping a small local transport company look like TNT!

Our own customer portal takes information from back office systems (and salesforce.com) and presents it in a meaningful and useful way to our clients in the same way Moto Direct have developed their on line offering. This technology can have a huge impact on reducing overheads and timescales. It also has a major impact on improving customer service and satisfaction.

Of course, none of this can be achieved without the right type internet access!

The era of a Mobile Workforce

March 1st, 2012

Mobility, and the ability to work from anywhere, as if you were at your desk, is perhaps the biggest single driver behind unified communications.

“Work is not a place, but a state of mind”, is a phrase we are sure you will hear with increasing regularity.

“Cloud” computing, and access to applications through a simple web browser are facilitating this at an ever increasing pace.

The mobile workforce is here and the younger generation (Generation Y) expect “always on” connectivity.

To expect your organisation to make the leap into this era in one jump is probably unrealistic. There is a gentler migration that we would of course be delighted to help you with at some time.

We hope the attached Cisco article is of some use to you.

Mason Infotech provide International voice solution

Identifying How Your Staff Communicate Can Save You Money

Mason Infotech have recently launched their 10th anniversary celebrations with a pledge to help businesses save money. One of the methods highlighted to help save money and increase productivity is to take advantage of IP Telephony, which will allow your mobile workforce to still work as if they were still at their desk.

One of Mason Infotech’s clients recently faced the double issue of remote workers in the UK and abroad who relied on their mobile phone to stay in contact with the office. This led to very high mobile bills (in some cases, over £6,000 in a matter of a few months!) and isolation from their local colleagues. Mason Infotech reviewed the challenges faced by the business, and designed a solution to answer the need, reduce costs and integrate the remote worker into the local workforce.

The solution offered integrated the remote worker onto the telephone system in Derbyshire. The worker was equipped with a softphone (which is a version of your deskphone but on your computer or laptop) and a headset, along with the training to use these new devices.

Softphone enables the remote worker to make calls over the internet, using IP telephony, while being connected to the local telephone system. A key feature of this solution is that calls back to the office are free and calls to UK numbers are charged the same for the remote worker as they are for the local workforce, whether they are calling from Nottingham, Norway  or New Zealand! The remote worker also has an extension number, making sure everyone can stay in touch. In addition, being an extension of the telephone system means that all workers can see when that colleague is available to call,  and can take full advantage of all the functionalities of the telephone system, increasing both availability and productivity.

This addition was completed by Mason Infotech, harnessing IP Telephony, Internet Services and User Training to provide a Unified Communications solution that was tailored to fit the customer’s business process. The net result is a happier remote worker, increased productivity and probably most importantly reduced costs – all key areas for any business to improve!

If you think that your business would benefit from Softphone, then we would love to see how we could start saving you money. Call Mark Powell today on 0333 240 0484

PLEDGE TO HELP BUSINESSES SAVE £80,000

February 9th, 2012

MASON INFOTECH LAUNCHES 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS WITH A PLEDGE TO AID AVERAGE BUSINESSES SAVE £80,000 TO HELP CREATE AND SAVE JOBS

As part of their tenth anniversary celebrations Mason Infotech have pledged to help businesses talk their way out of recession by helping them to save money which Steve Mason, Managing Director of Mason Infotech hopes will be used to create and save jobs.

According to Steve, the average sized business of ten employees could potentially identify over £80,000 in cost savings locked up in redundant or under utilised IT and telecoms equipment.

He added, “My experience over the last ten years has enabled me to list the top six areas where a telecoms review has highlighted significant cost savings which will immediately impact productivity, profit and employee morale at a time when this would be a very welcome boost.”

Steve believes the six key areas are:

1. Telephone call and line tariffs. Most businesses could save up to 50% on line rental costs by removing charges on lines no longer use, or worse, from being tied in to lengthy contracts on higher rate tariffs. Businesses should choose a provider with an on-line portal so that they can manage their telephone estate and remove unwanted lines. Potential cost saving £2500.

2. Higher speed internet. A recent study has calculated that the average worker paid £15k a year spends at least five hours a week needlessly waiting for computer programmes or files to download. High speed internet is now a business critical tool. Potential saving £20,000

3. Improve PC and telephone connectivity. It’s false economy not to replace out-dated equipment or continue buying additional desk space and equipment when staff could hot-desk or work from other locations. It’s the building block on which all your desk-based communications rely. Get this right and you’re creating the right environment for all of your business processes to run smoothly and cost efficiently.

4. Get mobile. Enabling employees to work remotely but still access company systems and information can cut travel time and increase employee productivity and morale perhaps even reduce overtime! Potential saving on connectivity and mobility £34,500.

5. Prevent fraud and security breaches. Thieves hacking into a telephone system, credit card fraud and virus scares cost UK businesses millions each year. Two recent toll fraud cases involved sums of £28k each! Ensuring your business is protected could save huge financial and reputational risk.

6. Train users. It’s a sad fact that staff probably only use a fraction of the features and benefits of the technology at their disposal. Often this is because they do not know it exists, are scared to ask how to use it, or have never been trained. Web conferencing is just one time saving example that could cut travel and meeting time costs. Potential saving £30,000

To show he is willing to place his money where his mouth is, keen rugby player Steve is investing a five figure sum rolling out a marketing campaign to raise awareness of these issues, which was launched on 31 January, along with events linked to Mason Infotech’s tenth anniversary celebrations.

Steve added, “To neglect the continual improvement and upgrade of your telecoms infrastructure is akin to running an older car rather than benefiting from the improved fuel economy, reliability, comfort, and enhanced technical and design features offered by the latest models.”

Mason Infotech provides voice and data communication solutions to businesses. The company employs ten staff based in offices on Churchill Business Park in Colwick, Nottingham and is owned by Steve and his wife Debrah. In 2012 the company will celebrate its tenth year in business and will reach a turnover of £1.8m million with double digit profit which is bucking the trend for businesses in their industry.

Telecoms Fraud

January 16th, 2012

Awareness in the area of phone hacking remains minimal despite the scale of the problem.

Losses due to global telecom fraud amount to an estimated $72-80 billion annually, according to figures from the Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA) Telecom Fraud Survey 2009. Subscription/ID theft accounted for around $22 billion, compromised PBX voicemail systems for $15 billion and premium rate service fraud $4.5 billion. The more money criminals make, the more they can invest in increasing their activities. To exacerbate the problem, 90 per cent of resellers still don’t fully appreciate the security risks of IP telephony. Unlike Mason Infotech who take security very seriously, many resellers aren’t informing clients of the risks or advising them to run checks.

If someone hacks into a voice network, they are potentially able to listen to calls and get information such as bank details and other confidential company data. The extent of this problem is not fully quantified because it’s in nobody’s interest to admit that they’re vulnerable. The perpetrators don’t want to be found out, and the victims are either unaware of the source of the information leakage, or if they become aware of it, they simply don’t want their problems and security failings to be publicised. Proving the extent of the problem, therefore, is difficult, but there is enough information to show that phone hacking is not just a potential risk, but a real one.

Premium Rate Call fraud is probably one of the best comparisons. Most people conceal any problems they have with it. There’s little discussion about the nature and size of toll fraud in the UK, despite the fact that many people are aware of how much toll fraud has affected them. There is information, but nobody wants it given out because nobody wants to be responsible for it.

Phone hacking is also an easy route into data hacking and is becoming more common for a number of reasons. Tools are freely available to carry out these crimes, and a lack of prosecutions encourages criminals to perpetuate the crime. The hacking can be carried out from outside the domain and there are large sums of money involved. In many cases, it’s easier to carry out these acts in the environment of voice rather than data.

Smartphone security is also an area of increasing concern. Research by getsafeonline.org shows that approximately one in five owners of smartphone devices can expect to lose or have them stolen at some point. Smartphones contain a huge amount of sensitive personal and work-related data. They can connect to company networks, potentially allowing access if phones are lost or stolen. But, no need for concern as there are security solutions available that will help manage and protect smartphones, as well as minimise the problems if they are lost.

Mason Infotech are experts in the fields of both voice and data security and are able to add security solutions to clients’ IT and telecoms solutions. Customers expect a duty of care from their telecoms provider and Mason Infotech will ensure that, wherever possible, clients are not left exposed to fraud.
