Bolsover District Council

Case Study: Bolsover District Council

Added : 6th July 2009

When Bolsover District Council decided to construct its new service depot in Doe Lea, Derbyshire, it raised a number of challenges for the Council's telecommunications department.

Connectivity for both voice and data between the two sites was quickly achieved with a direct high speed circuit  acquired to provide secure and reliable connectivity between the council offices and the 50 or so users at the new depot. Telephone services for the 400+ users at the Council's main offices are  provided for by a Siemens system and  the initial options appeared to be either, extend the existing solution using IP telephony, or install a totally independent solution.  Mason Infotech where able to provide a third alternative that had more appeal.

An upgrade to the legacy Siemens solution would have meant a fairly substantial project and a potential performance issue. Going with a completely stand alone solution would have solved the potential resilience problems, but wouldn't have provided a platform for expansion or future integration.

Mason Infotech, utilising the Avaya Communications Manager, have provided a solution that encompasses the best of all worlds. The initial expenditure is no more than either the upgrade or stand alone system would cost, however, over time, the solution can be very easily developed to provide a complete, integrated solution for the whole of the District Council.

Bolsover District Council Cabinet Member for Corporate Efficiency, Councillor Alan Hodkin said,

“We have been very happy with both the solution offered by the  Avaya Communications Manager and the guidance and services provided by Mason Infotech. We look forward to working with them to develop the solution even further."

The Avaya solution can be expanded to cater for all of the Council's staff if this is required at a later date. Additional facilities can also be acquired, with the Avaya Communications Manager offering a complete range of Unified Communications, home worker and remote worker solutions as well as advanced call centre services.

Stephen Mason, MD of Mason Infotech commented "The modular server and gateway architecture of the Avaya solution allows us to deploy solutions that can cater for immediate requirements, and then be built upon to provide more sophisticated solutions over time. This a great example of how a large organisation can start to invest and benefit from IP telephony without having to invest heavily or complete a total "forklift" upgrade.”
